AWS Launches an Infrastructure Region in Mexico

Amazon Web Services (AWS) ha anunciado oficialmente la apertura de su nueva Región México (Central), marcando un hito importa

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially announced the launch of its new Mexico (Central) Region, marking a significant milestone in the country’s technological infrastructure. This new region, located physically in Mexico, will allow businesses, governments, startups, and nonprofits to run their applications more efficiently, with lower latency and compliance with local data residency regulations. As part of its commitment to the country, AWS plans to invest more than $5 billion in Mexico over the next 15 years, including a $300,000 community fund in Querétaro for educational and social projects.

The economic impact of this new region will be substantial. AWS estimates that its construction and operation will generate approximately $10 billion for the Mexican GDP and create an average of over 7,000 jobs annually in sectors such as construction, engineering, and telecommunications. The infrastructure consists of three independent Availability Zones, designed to provide maximum security, operational continuity, and low latency for critical applications.

This region positions Mexico as a key technological hub in Latin America, offering access to advanced services such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, and cloud storage. Mexican companies like BBVA, Grupo Lala, and Hospital Ángeles are already using these services to drive their digital transformation. Additionally, the public sector, including state governments and UNAM, will leverage this infrastructure to enhance citizen services.

AWS complements this launch with significant training programs, having already trained over 500,000 people in cloud skills, with plans to train an additional 200,000 in generative AI by 2026. The company also maintains a strong commitment to sustainability, designing energy-efficient data centers that do not require water for cooling, aligned with its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

What about the rest of us?

The arrival of AWS’s new region in Mexico represents a great opportunity for micro-entrepreneurs and ordinary citizens, as it will enable the development of faster, more accessible, and cost-effective digital applications and services. Micro-businesses will have access to cutting-edge technology at reduced costs, improving their productivity and competitiveness without the need for large investments in infrastructure.

For the general population, this will translate into better digital services in areas such as healthcare, education, and government processes, with greater speed and data security. Additionally, the creation of specialized jobs and training programs in technological skills will open new career opportunities for many Mexicans, helping to bridge the digital divide and democratize access to tools that were once only available to large corporations.
